Secret #301 – Why does Santa have a long, white beard?

Hello there Santa and the elves,

I may not be a young whippersnapper anymore, but I sure am full of Christmas spirit. You’re never too old to believe!

I’ve been working on growing out my bears, you see, and I think your beard is just the best, Santa. I wonder if it’s just a fashion statement or if you have some other reason for having just a long beard. Is there a secret to it, or maybe some magic?

Hello to you Grandpa Willy! This is Sanoma the elf, you are so very right that you’re never too old for the magic of Christmas, and I’ll do my best to answer your question to Santa.

It might be a bit obvious, but part of the reason that Santa has such a lovely long beard is that he’s been growing it for a very very long time. Of course, I can’t tell you exactly how old Santa is, that’s a secret that only he and Mrs. Claus know, but he’s been around as long as anyone can remember.

There are some rumors among us elves that part of Santa’s magic, that is his own magic that has nothing to do with stardust, lives in his beard. I know that might sound silly, but it’s true that even Santa’s beard is a bit magic. I bet you didn’t know that when he leaves the North Pole, it actually gets shorter! It’s much easier for him to get around in the hustle and bustle of big cities, and that’s why you see Santa out in the world sometimes and he looks a bit different! I would bet that part of the reason he does keep it so long when he’s up here in the North Pole is a very simple one - it’s even better than a scarf! His beard keeps him so nice and toasty in the cold, it makes me wish I had one.

The last thing I can think of, and it’s a very important thing too, is that he simply wouldn’t look like himself with a beard, would he? Can you imagine Santa with no beard at all, I can’t!

Keep believing Grandpa Willy, and don’t give up on your own beard!
